Health & safety
Off-ratio foam can continue releasing unreacted compounds after the normal off-gassing window should have closed, which is worth taking seriously. We're not qualified to diagnose individual health effects — that's a matter for a medical professional.
EPA guidance treats the first roughly 24 to 72 hours after installation as the normal off-gassing window, after which correctly cured foam is expected to be functionally inert.
If odor or other off-ratio signs persist beyond the normal cure window, independent indoor air quality testing is a reasonable next step for objective data.
Isocyanates are a recognized potential respiratory irritant and sensitizer with occupational exposure, which is why installer PPE and occupant evacuation protocols exist. This is a topic for a qualified medical or industrial hygiene professional, not a self-diagnosis.
Remediation
Generally no. Unreacted chemistry trapped in off-ratio foam doesn't resolve by sealing or coating over it. Mechanical removal is the standard approach.
Encapsulation is most appropriate for managing residual odor on foam that's otherwise structurally sound and properly cured — usually paired with removal of any confirmed off-ratio sections.
Typically through mechanical removal — cutting, scraping, and pulling the material out — sometimes followed by sanding or media blasting, done in a contained, ventilated setup.
No. Scope depends on the extent of the problem — a localized patch may only require spot removal, while a widespread issue may call for a larger scope.
Exposed framing and sheathing are inspected and cleaned, sometimes with a primer-based encapsulation step, before new foam is reinstalled.
